Boniface suffered a thigh injury during the November international break and has been out since, with the Nigerian forward returning to training on Monday but too early for Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid, with the target of a return at RB Leipzig at the weekend.

Boniface’s return to action is good news for coach Xavier Alonso, who lost French forward Martin Tergrier to a ruptured Achilles tendon that ended his season early.

Following the injury to Martin Terrier at the weekend, Leverkusen will need Boniface to get back to his best quickly as they continue their pursuit of Bayern Munich. Last season, the 24-year-old never returned to form following an injury in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations and needed the summer to get fully fit.

Before his hamstring injury, Boniface was one of Leverkusen’s best players. Having scored six goals and provided one assist in the first 10 games of the season. But the 24-year-old now faces competition for a starting spot with Patrik Schick. Who has been in fine form during his time on the sidelines. Scoring 15 goals in 22 games in all competitions.
